Alternatives to Traditional Pizza Sauce

You say tomato, we say... oh the pizzabilities of these non-traditional pizza sauces! They're just as easy as tomato-based sauce, and everyone will think you're a culinary genius.

1. Where there's smoke, there's BBQ

This is an easy one. BBQ chicken pizza isn't new, but BBQ anything else pizza can be! For your next game day party, try swapping chicken for pulled pork or meatball slices. For the veggie-lover, grilling ears of corn and cutting off the kernels to spread on your BBQ pizza keeps the smokiness without the meatiness - and you can do the same with any of your favorite veggies. If you're as obsessed with cauliflower as we are, you can toss florets in some bbq sauce as a topping for a Cauliflower on CAULIPOWER Pizza.

2. Pesto Change-o

You can find jarred basil pesto in most grocery stores, but it's just a push of the processor button to make at home with fresh basil, pinenuts, garlic, Parmesan, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Pesto's so packed with flavor, that you don't need much more to make your pizza special, but it pairs well with classic Italian flavors, like vine-ripened tomoatoes, ricotta, and, of course, a glass of Chianti. Taylor (@foodfaithfit on Instagram) topped CAULIPOWER plain crust with pesto, goat cheese, bacon, and strawberries! Click the photo for a printable version of the recipe.

Pro tip: If you can find lemon basil, swap it in for the regular stuff to awaken the tastebuds and really make an impression.

3. Not afraid of Alfredo

Many white pizza recipes opt for ricotta, but try alfredo sauce for a savory, creamy base that reminds everyone of their childhood favorite - also known as adult macaroni and cheese. It makes a great dinner pizza topped with chicken, mushrooms, roasted garlic, or anything else you might stir into a pasta dish!

Purees make excellent and nutrient-packed "sauces." Roast sweet potatoes, butternut squash, or even pumpkin with some brown sugar and puree for an unforgettable fall pizza. Another fan also named Taylor (@fittgirlfood on Instagram) likes to top CAULIPOWER with sweet potato, marinated kale, pumpkin seeds, and chicken apple sausage. Click the photo for the full recipe.

Pro tip: Add a kick of sambal or other chili sauce to your puree to balance the sweetness with a little tangy heat. Top with goat cheese and candied walnuts, if you're really adventurous.
